Espíritu Travel’s 12-day Culinary Journey Through Spain fully customizable tour allows you to eat your way through Spain, tapa by tapa! With 48 Michelin Stars in the Basque Country alone, plan to eat like a king, but let’s not forget about drinks — the Rioja wine region produces some of best wines in the world!

You’ll start your visit in Basque Country for some creative dining experiences such as visiting an underwater winery, the Basque Center and a number of restaurants curated to specifically to your preferences and tastes. Then, you’ll visit La Rioja to tour wineries and sample some crianzas and reservas. The final stop is Barcelona, where you’ll experience city the through food, wine and architecture, including a cooking course and cava tasting. Don’t forget to pack your appetite for this tour!

Day 1 (Arrival Day)

Madrid

Your tour will start off in Spain’s capital city — Madrid. Leisurely stroll the city to take in the wonders of this authentic Spanish haven, with its boulevards covered in trees and fountains lined with impressive buildings. That evening, you’ll have a curated food tour from a local expert guide that will give you a delicious introduction to the Spanish food scene.

Day 2

Madrid

Spend your day with an expert guide visiting Madrid’s most beautiful spots including the Plaza Mayor, the Puerta de Alcalá and the fountain and square of Cibeles. Then, you’ll visit one of the world’s most famous art museums, the Prado, known for its Goya, Velázquez and El Greco masterpieces. That evening, your flamenco guide will take you to the best show in the Madrid (perhaps in all of Spain). Although this culture experience has roots are in southern Spain, Madrid is known for having the best flamenco, as the most talented dancers, guitarists and vocalists all come to the Spanish capital to share their art form with the world.

Day 3

Madrid, Bilbao

After flying to Bilbao, a driver will take you to a luxury hotel to relax after your journey. Hungry yet? We’ll recommend some of Bilbao’s best restaurants where you can tuck in a hearty lunch of Basque flavors before seeing the city’s highlights, like the Guggenheim Museum and the old quarter.

Day 4

Bilbao, Plentzia

Enjoy a leisurely Spanish morning wandering around on your own through Bilbao before your driver picks you up to head north to Plentzia, home of the world’s first undersea winery. Learn all about this remarkable project while touring the lab, followed by a tasting of their best wines as well as local pintxos. Afterwards, you’ll return to Bilbao for a free evening.

Day 5

Bilbao, San Sebastián

It’s time to head to Bilbao’s glamorous neighbor, San Sebastián, starting off at the Basque Culinary Center for a private tasting of farm-fresh olives, olive oils, Iberian ham and sausage and local wine. Afterwards, you’ll head to the city center to check into your hotel before a night of pintxo-hopping with your local expert guide. Expect to sample all the classics!

Day 6

San Sebastián

Kick off your morning with a guided tour of San Sebastián, which will take you through the old historical quarter’s weaving streets into the newer, more modern parts of the city. Then, prepare for a once-in-a-lifetime Basque cuisine experience, as you’ll enjoy a private dinner in the “secret” kitchen of a Michelin-star restaurant. The chefs will prepare a unique menu just for you — as you watch!

Day 7

San Sebastián, La Rioja

Head to Spain’s most coveted wine region, La Rioja. Your first stop is a Michelin-star restaurant hidden in a tiny Rioja town, where you’ll sample a local aperitif and then help the chef collect some seasonal ingredients to help prepare your meal. The, indulge in a freshly-prepared lunch, with a Rioja wine pairing, of course.

Day 8

La Rioja

Today is dedicated to wine and you’ll get to learn everything you ever wanted to know about Rioja variety by visiting three of Espíritu Travel’s favorite wineries. Tour, taste and see how the wine is made in this very special region of Spain. Then, you’ll have a special culinary experience with a fabulous lunch and wine pairing at a famous wine hotel. On the way back to your hotel, you’ll stop in Laguardia to view the awe-inspiring architecture of Ysios winery.

Day 9

La Rioja, Barcelona

Take the train to Barcelona, where your driver will be waiting to pick you up and take you to your hotel. Then, put your chef skills to the test during a traditional Catalan cooking lesson, where you’ll concoct a three-course dinner with wine pairings. The fruits of your labor come afterwards when you’ll get to relax and enjoy your meal.

Day 10

Barcelona

See the highlights of Barcelona on a walking tour with your local experience guide, such as the famous Sagrada Familia cathedral, Paseo de Gracia luxury shopping street, the Gothic quarter, the Born district and the Picasso Museum. Tonight’s dinner is the ultimate way to dine like a local as two Catalan couples will treat you to a ‘movable feast’ with homemade Spanish delights in each of their apartments.

Day 11

Barcelona,  Penedés Wine Region

Your driver will whisk you off to the Penedés wine region to tour a local wine cellar, a delicious way to spend your last day in Spain. Here, you’ll taste three different wines, followed by a lunch created with locally-sourced products paired with cava, the Spanish version of champagne.
